Background: 

This policy is written to inform potential students of English language requirements at enrolment.

Purpose: 

The English Proficiency Policy is to set the standard of English proficiency required for admissions to the college for all courses.

Scope: 

This policy applies to all potential students of the college.

Statement: 

The College is committed to offering its educational programs to students from a broad range of backgrounds, cultures and languages. In doing so, it recognises its responsibility to ensure that students whose first language is not English, have sufficient proficiency to undertake the program of their choice.

The College has different English Language proficiency requirements for different courses specified with the accreditation or entry requirements of each course.

Required scores must be achieved from a single test report, even if you have sat for multiple tests. The original test report form must be included with the application. Certified copies and TOEFL examiner’s score records are not accepted. Details about TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson and CAE testing are available by following these links:

Other qualifications may from time to time be deemed by the Academic Board to demonstrate satisfactory English language proficiency. Approved qualifications will be listed in Schedule 1 of this policy, refer to Schedule 1 below.

Schedule 1

  1. Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: Pass
  2. Denmark: Danish Upper Secondary School: Prior to 1 August 2007: Grade of 7 in English A or Grade of 9 in English B. after 1 August 2007: Grade of 7 in English A, or Grade of 10 in English B
  3. East African Advanced Certificate of Education (EAACE): Grade C in English
  4. Finland: Finnish High School: Grade of 8 or better in English (13 point scale) or 7 or better (9 point scale)
  5. Germany: German Senior High School: ‘4’4 result in English in at least one of three years of Senior High School or DAAD: Minimum Grade of B in all areas
  6. Great Britain: General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) - GCE’A’ - C pass in General Paper English, or other Humanities subjects
  7. Hong Kong: Year 12 (HKDSE): Minimum Level of 3 for English
  8. Iceland: Studentsprof: Grade of 5.2 in English (on a 10 point scale)
  9. India: Senior Secondary qualifications from the Central Board of Secondary Education or Council for Indian Certificate Examination (CISE) or National Open School: Grade of 60% in English
  10. International Baccalaureate: English B- Higher Level minimum Grade 5, English A1 or A2 – Higher/Standard levels minimum Grade 4
  11. Malaysia: C6 in Cambridge English Language, STPM (Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia-Malaysian Higher School Certificate): Minimum Grade of C in English Literature, SPM: B pass in English
  12. Netherlands: HAVO Grade of 7 or better in English, VWO Grade of 6 or better in English
  13. Norway: Grade of “4” in English in the final year of the Norwegian Vitnemal: den Vidergaende Skole
  14. Samoa: Pacific Senior Secondary Certificate Pass grade in English
  15. Sweden: Grade of “3” in English in the final year of the Swedish Avgangsbetyg < 1997 Upper Secondary Leaving Certificate. Offer letters are to recommend students enrol in ESL101 in their first semester of study. (NB: This should be reviewed in July 2003); A grade of “G” in English in the final year of the Swedish Slutbetyg fran Gymnasieskolan > 1997 Upper Secondary Leaving Certificate
  16. Tanzania: Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education (ACSE) Grade of C in English
  17. Vanuatu: Pacific Senior Secondary Certificate Pass Grade in English
  18. Australian TAFE Studies – completion of an AQF Certificate IV or higher AQF qualification
  19. Completion of a one year full time equivalent Tertiary Preparation/Bridging Program as listed in the UAC Tertiary Preparation Schedules
